The $14 Top That Proved Looking Good Isn't Enough

the notification said "SPRING OUTFITS FOR WOMEN SALE" and i clicked it like it was a sign. like the universe finally decided to give me something. sampeel eyelet tank. loose. apricot. 24. i stared at the screen for eleven minutes. i counted.

i bought it bc i needed to believe in something that wasn't us. something that didn't require him to text back. something i could control with a credit card and a shiipping address. the description said "FLOWY" and "delicate embroidery" and i thought yes. yes. this is what i've been missing. not him. not the version of him i made up in my head. this top. this specific top that would make my shoulders look soft and my collarbone look like a place someone would want to kiss.

i imagined the whole thing. the whole stupid movie. me walking into the kitchen wearing it with those jeans he used to say made my waist look small. him looking up from whatever he was doing. the pause. the recognition. the "WOW." just one word. that's all i needed. one word to prove i was still worth noticing.

spring outfits for women under 30. that's what i searched. that's what i found. that's what i pinned my whole hope on like a fucking idiot.

spring outfits for women under 30 that look like hope

it arrived in a plastic bag that smelled like warehouse. i washed it twice. ironed it twice. stood in front of the mirror and practiced my casual face. the one that says "I JUST THREW THIS ON" when really i had been planning it for three days. the eyelet was prettier than the picture. little holes that let light through. delicate. the kind of detail that makes u think someone cared when they made it. someone cared about how it would look on skin.

i paired it with the blazer he left at my place. the black one. i thought that was poetic. wearing his absence over the thing i bought to bring him back. i did my makeup. not too much. just enough to look like i wasn't trying. the tank was loose in the right places. tight in the right places. i looked at myself and thought okay. okay. this is it. this is the version of me that gets to be happy.

he was on the couch when i came out. same spot as always. phone in hand. i walked past him to the kitchen. opened the fridge. closed it. opened it again. the silence was so loud. the fabric moved when i moved. i could feel it against my stomach. soft. present. real. he didn't say anything. i stood there with the fridge light on my face and felt the hope drain out of my shoes.

"GOING SOMEWHERE?" he finally asked. not looking up.

NO, i said. just... wanted to wear something nice.

hm.

that was it. hm. a sound. not even a word. i went to the bedroom and took off the blazer. hung it back up. sat on the edge of the bed and felt the eyelet embroidery with my fingers. little holes. little empty spaces. i understood them suddenly.

i read something later about how couples become roommates without

noticing. pizza on the couch. sports on the tv. silence where

conversation used to live. i recognized us in every line.

casual spring outfits for women who are dressing for ghosts

after that i wore it with jeans to the grocery store. the same jeans. the ones that apparently didn't matter anymore. i bought wine and strawberries and things i didn't need. the tank felt different without an audience. lighter. sadder. i kept catching my reflection in the freezer section and looking away quick. like i'd seen something i wasn't supposed to.

i tried it with a skirt once. the white one. stood in front of the mirror and pretended i was going somewhere. anywhere. the eyelet looked good against my skin. ngl. it did. i took a picture and deleted it. who was i sending it to. who was i trying to convince.

spring outfits black women under 20. i started searching that too. like maybe the problem was the price point. like if i spent less it would hurt less when he didn't notice. like the math of attraction worked on a budget. i bought three more tops. none of them had embroidery. none of them felt like hope. they just felt like cloth.

i wore the sampeel one again. to nothing. to an empty apartment. to the sound of him not being there anymore. the flowy part caught the air when i moved. i kept touching the fabric like it could tell me something. like it held the answer to why looking good never fixed anything. why i kept thinking the right outfit could unlock the right version of him. the one who saw me.

spring outfits for women sale: what i actually bought

the thing about sales is they make u feel smart. like u beat the system. like u got something valuable for less than it was worth. i thought that's what i was doing. getting this top for 24. beating the system. but the system was never the price. the system was me thinking i could buy my way into being loved.

i found the top again last week. folded in a drawer under things i don't wear. the eyelet was still pretty. still letting light through those little holes. i put it on and went to the window. stood there in the sun and watched dust move through the air. the fabric felt the same. loose. soft. mine. i realized i never asked if i liked it. i only asked if he would.

that's the part that stings. not the money. not the ironing twice. the part where i made myself small enough to fit into his attention span and called it love.

i've been wearing it different now. with sweatpants. with nothing underneath. with the tags still on something else i bought for someone who isn't here. the embroidery doesn't mean what it used to. it's just thread. just holes. just a thing i put on my body because i want to. because the air feels good through the fabric. because i look in the mirror and say "okay" and mean it differently.

what i found at 3m when i couldn't sleep

i don't know why i clicked it. some article. some guy named james bauer talking about what men actually need. i laughed at first. stfu. another man telling women how to be enough. but i kept reading. two hours. maybe three. he said something about a "HERO INSTINCT." about how some men need to feel needed to feel anything at all. i fell down a hole after that. found this thing about 12 words

that supposedly wake something up in him. twelve words. i counted

mine. i had been sending paragraphs. novels. entire apologies.

twelve words i never got right. and i sat there in the dark with my phone burning my eyes and thought about all the times i made myself easy to need. easy to keep. easy to leave.

i thought about the top. how i bought it to be seen. how i ironed it to be chosen. how none of it worked because i was playing a game where the rules kept changing. where my move was always "LOOK PRETTY AND HOPE" and his move was always "MAYBE LATER."

the book or course or whatever it is i'm not saying buy it. i'm saying i found it when i was broken and it made me think about the performance. the whole thing i was doing. dressing for him. hoping for him. shrinking for him. it made me wonder if the problem was never the outfit. if the problem was i thought the right spring outfit for women under 30 could unlock a door that was never locked. just... not mine to open.

the top btw

the top btw found it here under 30. eyelet. loose. apricot like a promise nobody kept. it's worth it. she is worth it. even if he never said so. even if the only person who sees it is the cashier at the store where u buy wine alone. even if the mirror is the only one who says okay. okay. you look like spring.

i wear it now with the blazer i bought for myself. black. structured. nothing left behind by anyone. the eyelet shows through the sleeves if i push them up. little holes. little spaces where light gets in. i think about that sometimes. how broken things let light through. how i spent so long trying to be whole for someone who only wanted me when i was leaking.

spring outfits for women 2026: a question i can't answer

do u ever wonder if u were the problem. or if u just never knew the rules of the game he was playing. there's a free quiz that asks u seven questions. tells u which stage u're actually in.

i took it when i was at my lowest. i didn't like the answer.

but at least i stopped pretending i didn't know. bc i stand in front of mirrors now and i look good. i know i do. the top still fits. still flows. still catches air when i move. and sometimes i put it on and wait for the sadness to come. and sometimes it doesn't. sometimes i just look like a woman who bought something pretty on sale and kept it. who kept herself. who learned that under 30 can buy fabric but it can't buy the moment he decides to see u. that moment doesn't have a price. or maybe it does and i was never willing to pay it. or maybe he was never selling. or maybe and this is the part that wakes me up maybe there was never anything for sale at all. maybe i was standing in an empty store with my credit card out, asking a closed sign to love me back.
